HP EliteBook 830 G5 The compact 13.3-inch EliteBook from the 2018 redesign

With the G5 generation, HP rebuilt the EliteBook 800 series from the ground up — thinner display bezels and a new machined-aluminium body. The HP EliteBook 830 G5 is the 13.3-inch face of that new shape: a serious premium machine in a small chassis, with the full set of HP business protections and a quad-core Kaby Lake-R platform on 8th Gen Core. As a refurbished business laptop from ITR Bulgaria, it puts the premium class within reach at a sensible price.

Benefits

Why the HP EliteBook 830 G5 is one of the smart compact buys in the premium business class as a refurbished laptop

A 13.3″ screen in a compact body

The thin bezels of the G5 redesign fit a 13.3-inch panel into a chassis close in size to the previous 12.5-inch model. More screen to work on, without more bulk in the bag.

A quad-core Kaby Lake-R platform on 8th Gen Core

Intel Core 8th Gen (Kaby Lake-R) with UHD Graphics 620 — the generation where the 15-watt U-class first became quad-core. Holds several business apps open at once without slowing down.

SO-DIMM memory up to 32 GB — rare for the 13″ class

Two SO-DIMM slots allow a RAM upgrade to 32 GB DDR4 after purchase — unusual in the 13.3-inch class, where most machines of the era used soldered memory. Long-term headroom for teams that buy once.

Thunderbolt 3 — one USB-C for everything

A single Thunderbolt 3 port (USB-C, up to 40 Gbps) connects a compatible docking station, external monitors and power over one cable. At the desk the laptop connects in one move, then leaves with you.

A full-size RJ45 Ethernet port

A full Ethernet port in a compact 13-inch body — no dongle. Useful in client offices and secure networks that still run on cable rather than Wi-Fi alone.

720p HD camera and optional IR for Windows Hello

On configurations with the IR camera and Windows Hello set up, you sign in by face — no password every time you unlock. Non-touch configurations can also have the HP Privacy Camera with a physical lens shutter for when it's not in use; check the equipment of the specific unit.

50 Wh battery with HP Fast Charge

HP Fast Charge charges the battery to 50% in about 30 minutes with the laptop off or in standby and a compatible adapter of at least 65 W; HP allows a ±10% variance in the time. A short break between two meetings is enough to get the machine through the rest of the day — without hunting for an outlet at every stop.

HP Sure Start and the business protections

Hardware-enforced security from the premium class: a discrete TPM 2.0 and HP Sure features depending on configuration. Sure Start Gen4 (self-healing BIOS), Sure Run and Sure Recover require 8th Gen Core; Sure Click works on supported platforms and applications. These technologies later became part of HP Wolf Security, the brand introduced in 2021. Check the available features for the specific configuration.

Sure View G2 privacy panel (option)

On configurations with HP Sure View G2 (300 nits in sharing mode and 150 nits in privacy mode) you press a button and the screen becomes unreadable to the person beside you. For working on confidential documents on a plane, train or waiting room.

Sensible value as a refurbished laptop

As a used laptop that has passed a technical audit and refurbishment, the HP EliteBook 830 G5 delivers compact premium business class at a price you simply can't pay for a new machine of the same tier.

Product description

HP EliteBook 830 G5: the compact 13.3-inch EliteBook from the 2018 redesign

The G5 generation is the biggest change to the EliteBook 800 series in years. HP dropped the older construction — magnesium with an aluminium palm rest — and replaced it with a body machined from a single block of aluminium, while the bezels around the screen shrank noticeably. That shrinking is exactly what produced the HP EliteBook 830 G5: a full 13.3-inch screen now fits into a chassis close in size to the previous 12.5-inch model. So the 830 G5 became the 13.3-inch face of the new shape — a compact premium business laptop that gives you more screen without taking up more space.

Who does this matter to? The person whose laptop travels every day. The 13.3-inch 16:9 panel and a starting weight of around 1.33 kg make it a machine you don't feel in the bag, yet one that's enough for serious work with documents and spreadsheets. On the variants with 8th Gen Core i5/i7, a quad-core Kaby Lake-R platform with Intel UHD Graphics 620 sits underneath — for its generation, this was the step where Intel's 15-watt Core U-series got four cores instead of two. There are also dual-core variants with 7th Gen Core and HD Graphics 620. On the quad-core variants that means calmer behaviour when you have a browser, an email client and a few business apps open at the same time.

The aluminium body isn't cosmetic. A chassis machined from one block doesn't rely on bonded panels that loosen over the years — which is why the machine still feels solid in the hand after years of opening and closing. The same seriousness shows in security, an area where the EliteBook line has a long history. HP Sure Start — the self-healing BIOS that HP introduced as the industry's first of its kind — works below the operating system and checks the firmware before the host CPU runs the system BIOS; if it finds damage or tampering, it restores the BIOS to a clean state from a protected copy. On HP EliteBook 830 G5 configurations with 8th Gen Core it arrives as Sure Start Gen4, alongside Sure Run and Sure Recover; Sure Click also requires a supported platform and application — the set of protections HP later grouped under the Wolf Security name. This is a machine built to disappear into the work and stay out of your way — neither with a loosening chassis nor with infected firmware.

Below the surface, the HP EliteBook 830 G5 keeps a few practical choices that the name doesn't reveal. Two SO-DIMM slots allow a memory upgrade to 32 GB DDR4 after purchase — rare for the 13.3-inch class, where most machines of the era solder the RAM to the board. Connectivity runs through one Thunderbolt 3 port (USB-C, up to 40 Gbps) that, with a compatible dock, carries two external monitors and power, and next to it sits a full-size RJ45 Ethernet — a rare guest in a chassis this small. Add a 50 Wh battery with HP Fast Charge (up to 50% in about 30 minutes with the machine off or in standby and a compatible adapter of at least 65 W), a 720p HD camera with optional IR for face sign-in through Windows Hello, and the optional Sure View G2 privacy panel, and you get a complete premium business machine, only in a smaller size.

On the keyboard of every such machine lives the most famous key combination in history — with an author, and with a joke that entered the annals. In 1981 engineer David Bradley added the emergency chord Ctrl+Alt+Del to the first IBM PC — keys deliberately spread apart so they could not be pressed by accident. Twenty years later, on an anniversary stage beside Bill Gates, Bradley delivered the famous line: “I may have invented it, but Bill made it famous.” The hall laughed; Gates, not so much. Three keys, one era — and a reminder that even the most serious hardware has a sense of humor.

The honest trade-off is clear: the HP EliteBook 830 G5 gives up screen area for compactness. If you work mostly with spreadsheets or want more room for windows, the 14-inch HP EliteBook 840 G5 or the 15.6-inch HP EliteBook 850 G5 from the same generation make more sense. The machine also relies only on integrated graphics — HD 620 with 7th Gen or UHD 620 with 8th Gen Core — fine for office work, but not for video editing or 3D. Among the direct 13.3-inch rivals, the Dell Latitude 7390 starts from a different material — carbon fibre, which makes it slightly lighter (~1.18 kg), and an IR camera for Windows Hello is available on it too as an option. The more compact Lenovo ThinkPad X280 is 12.5-inch — a different size class, for someone who wants an even smaller machine. And within the series, the HP EliteBook 830 G6 is the Whiskey Lake successor with one Thunderbolt port; the 830 G5 is the more affordable Kaby Lake-R version of the same shape. As a refurbished laptop from ITR Bulgaria, audited and prepared for reuse, the EliteBook 830 G5 is one of the sensible ways to get a compact business-class laptop from the premium tier without the price of a new machine — a practical used laptop backed by a real warranty.

Who it's for

Scenarios where the HP EliteBook 830 G5 makes the most sense

Travelling professionals

Someone who carries the laptop every day between offices, airports and hotels. The compact body and a starting weight around 1.33 kg don't weigh down the bag, and HP Fast Charge charges the battery to 50% in about 30 minutes with the laptop off or in standby and a compatible adapter of at least 65 W.

Hybrid work on a compact machine

At the desk, one Thunderbolt 3 cable connects a dock, two monitors and power at once. At the end of the day you pull the cable and go — the same machine for home and office, without leaning on a larger laptop.

Consultants on the move

A consultant who presents in a different office each week can sign in by face on a configuration with the IR camera and Windows Hello set up, instead of typing a password, and the full-size RJ45 earns its keep when the client's network is still wired.

Working with confidential information

On configurations with Sure View G2, a lawyer or financial analyst presses a button and the screen turns unreadable from the side — together with the optional fingerprint reader and HP Sure Start Gen4 on 8th Gen Core configurations, this is a machine for people who handle sensitive data in public places.

Additional information

Where this model fits in the series ▼

The HP EliteBook 830 G5 belongs to the EliteBook 800 series — HP's premium business line. This is the segment HP positions directly against the Dell Latitude 7000 and Lenovo ThinkPad T/X13. Above it sit the ultra-premium flagships (HP EliteBook x360 1030/1040 and HP Elite Dragonfly), and below it the ProBook 600 (mainstream business) and ProBook 400 (entry business).

Within the G5 generation the series has three size variants: the HP EliteBook 830 G5 (13.3″, the compact one), the HP EliteBook 840 G5 (14″, the balanced standard) and the HP EliteBook 850 G5 (15.6″, more screen area). The HP EliteBook 830 G5 is the smallest of the three — for people who put portability first.

G5 is the big reshaping of the series — a new machined-aluminium unibody and thinner bezels. The place the HP EliteBook 830 G5 holds in the previous generation was occupied by the 12.5-inch HP EliteBook 820 G4; it was precisely the thinner bezels that let a 13.3-inch screen fit into nearly the same chassis, hence the new 830 name. The successor is the HP EliteBook 830 G6 with the Whiskey Lake platform and one Thunderbolt port.

The HP EliteBook 830 G5 is not ideal if… ▼
  • You want more screen area for spreadsheets, multi-window work or financial models — the 14-inch HP EliteBook 840 G5 or the 15.6-inch HP EliteBook 850 G5 from the same generation are more comfortable.
  • You need a discrete graphics card for video editing, 3D or CAD. The HP EliteBook 830 G5 relies on integrated Intel HD 620 or UHD 620 depending on the processor generation; for that kind of work, look at the HP ZBook series.
  • You want a 2-in-1 design and tablet mode — the HP EliteBook 830 G5 is a standard clamshell laptop with no 360-degree hinges, although it has touch-screen variants. For a convertible, look at the HP EliteBook x360 1030 G3.
  • You want a newer platform — the successor HP EliteBook 830 G6 offers Whiskey Lake, but it also has one Thunderbolt port. The HP EliteBook 830 G5 is the more affordable version of the same shape.
  • You're chasing minimum weight at all costs — the Dell Latitude 7390 with a carbon-fibre chassis starts from about 1.18 kg, and the 12.5-inch Lenovo ThinkPad X280 starts from 1.13 kg in an FHD non-touch configuration.
  • You need a guaranteed specific configuration (a particular CPU, RAM, SSD, IR camera, Sure View panel or WWAN module) — configurations vary, so it's worth checking the specific unit.
Choosing the right size and construction ▼

13.3-inch class (HP EliteBook 830 G5): the most compact in the G5 generation, starting weight around 1.33 kg. Suited to frequent travel and work on the move. Trade-off: less working room on screen.

14-inch class (HP EliteBook 840 G5): the balanced standard. More screen for documents and spreadsheets, at a weight that stays comfortable for daily carry.

15.6-inch class (HP EliteBook 850 G5): the largest screen area for multi-window work and spreadsheets. Heavier — best for work mostly at a desk or with occasional carry.

Construction: the HP EliteBook 830 G5 is an aluminium unibody, machined from a single block — no bonded panels that loosen over time. The series passes MIL-STD-810G durability testing. Around 17.6 mm thick.

Alternative models ▼

Within HP:

HP EliteBook 830 G6 — the direct Whiskey Lake successor. The same 13.3-inch shape, but with a newer platform and also one Thunderbolt 3 port. The HP EliteBook 830 G5 is the more affordable Kaby Lake-R version. The sensible choice is the one whose price and platform match your budget.

HP EliteBook 840 G5 — the 14-inch sibling from the same generation. More screen area with the same platform and business features, at the cost of a little more weight.

HP EliteBook 850 G5 — the 15.6-inch variant. The largest screen area; better suited to work mostly at a desk.

HP ProBook 430 G5 — a 13.3-inch machine, but from the entry business segment. More affordable, but without the full set of premium protections and without the aluminium unibody chassis.

Cross-brand alternatives (12.5–13.3″ premium business, same generation):

Dell Latitude 7390 — Dell's direct 13.3-inch rival. It starts from a carbon-fibre chassis, which makes it slightly lighter (~1.18 kg). It has an optional IR camera for Windows Hello and a replaceable RAM module in one SO-DIMM slot; Dell lists up to 16 GB, against two slots and 32 GB on the HP EliteBook 830 G5.

Lenovo ThinkPad X280 — the more compact 12.5-inch premium Lenovo ThinkPad, with a starting weight from 1.13 kg in an FHD non-touch configuration. This is a different size class — an even smaller machine with a smaller screen, for someone who prioritises minimum bulk over screen area.

Note: don't compare the HP EliteBook 830 G5 with the lower-tier HP ProBook 430 G5 or the Lenovo ThinkPad E series as equivalents — those are mainstream/entry business class with a different target group.

Refurbished by ITR Bulgaria: what value do you get? ▼

The HP EliteBook 830 G5 is easy to service, and that matters on the refurbished market. The two SO-DIMM slots allow memory to be replaced or upgraded, and the M.2 NVMe SSD is replaceable too — the technical audit and preparation go through without unnecessary compromise.

On top of that comes the broad corporate deployment of the EliteBook 800 series: spare parts, original chargers and HP docking stations are available on the market years after the model launched, and HP supports the series with long-term BIOS and driver updates. After refurbishment, the model is prepared for repeat business use and comes with a real warranty and support from ITR Bulgaria — a practical used laptop where you know what you're getting.

Frequently asked questions ▼

Is the HP EliteBook 830 G5 a good choice as a used laptop?

Yes, if you want a compact premium business machine. The HP EliteBook 830 G5 gives you a 13.3-inch aluminium EliteBook with the full HP Sure protections, a SO-DIMM upgrade to 32 GB and Thunderbolt 3 — a tier of device a new machine at a similar price rarely reaches. As a refurbished laptop it comes with a warranty from ITR Bulgaria.

What's the difference between the HP EliteBook 830 G5 and HP EliteBook 830 G6?

The G6 is the direct Whiskey Lake successor (an 8th-gen refresh) with one Thunderbolt port. The chassis and shape stay close. The HP EliteBook 830 G5 offers Kaby Lake-R with 8th Gen Core, as well as dual-core 7th Gen Core and is usually more affordable as a refurbished laptop — a sensible choice when the platform from this generation is enough for your tasks.

Can the memory on the HP EliteBook 830 G5 be upgraded?

Yes. Unlike many 13.3-inch machines of the era that solder the RAM, the HP EliteBook 830 G5 has two SO-DIMM slots and supports up to 32 GB DDR4. Memory can be replaced or increased after purchase. The SSD (M.2 NVMe) is replaceable too.

Does it have a camera for Windows Hello?

On configurations with the IR camera — yes, you sign in by face through Windows Hello. Non-touch configurations can also have the HP Privacy Camera with a physical shutter. The IR camera is an option, so with a used laptop it's worth checking the specific unit.

Is it suitable for equipping office staff?

Yes, especially staff on the move. The EliteBook series supports centralised IT management through the HP Manageability Integration Kit, and the Sure protections provide corporate-grade security. As a refurbished business laptop from ITR Bulgaria it comes with a warranty — a convenient option for companies equipping their staff with a compact premium machine.
