Benefits

Why the HP EliteBook 850 G5 is a sensible choice for a large premium workstation as a refurbished laptop

15.6″ screen for multi-window work

The largest format in the premium EliteBook 800 line. More room for long spreadsheets, two documents side by side, or code and docs at once — without constant window switching.

Optional AMD Radeon RX540 (2 GB)

On some configurations the HP EliteBook 850 G5 ships with a discrete Radeon RX540 — headroom for light graphics work that the 13-inch HP EliteBook 830 G5 from the same generation did not offer at all.

56 Wh battery — bigger than HP EliteBook 830/840 G5

The larger 15.6″ chassis fits a 56 Wh battery instead of the 50 Wh cell in the smaller models of the series. HP Fast Charge tops up to about half the charge in roughly half an hour with the laptop off or in standby and a compatible adapter of at least 65 W; times may vary.

Unibody aluminium chassis

This generation's redesign moved to a unibody shell milled from a single block of aluminium. Glued panels loosen over the years; the milled body stays solid even after long daily use.

Hardware security from HP Sure

Sure Start Gen 4 protects and recovers the BIOS; Sure Run and Sure Recover add process protection and system recovery, and on this model they require an 8th-gen Intel Core configuration. Sure Click isolates supported applications. They are among the technologies HP later included in HP Wolf Security, introduced in 2021.

SO-DIMM memory up to 32 GB

Two SO-DIMM slots with DDR4-2133 on 7th-gen or DDR4-2400 on 8th-gen processors — memory upgrades after purchase, it is not soldered. For a company that keeps a machine for years, that is real long-term headroom without replacing the whole laptop.

Thunderbolt 3 + full-size RJ45

Thunderbolt 3 handles docking and an external monitor over a single cable, while the built-in full-size RJ45 fits offices still on wired networks — no dongle needed.

IR camera for Windows Hello (option)

On the right configurations — an IR camera for face sign-in via Windows Hello. A lens shutter is offered on non-touch variants. Handy for people who unlock the machine dozens of times a day.

Bang & Olufsen audio

Bang & Olufsen stereo speakers and three microphones — clearer sound on long Teams, Zoom or Google Meet calls from the desk.

Premium 15.6″ at a more sensible price

As a used laptop that has passed technical audit and refurbishment, the HP EliteBook 850 G5 gives access to a large premium business screen at a price a new budget 15-inch model rarely matches in class.

Product description

HP EliteBook 850 G5: the 15.6-inch premium EliteBook from the 2018 redesign

HP's business portfolio follows a ladder that is not always obvious to a buyer from the outside: ProBook 400 is entry level, ProBook 600 is mainstream, and EliteBook 800 is the premium line — the machines HP places directly against the Dell Latitude 7000 and the Lenovo ThinkPad T. The HP EliteBook 850 G5 is the 15.6-inch member of that premium series, and it comes from a particular generation: the 2018 redesign, where HP redrew the entire look of the 800 line and brought the thin-bezel design to all three sizes at once. The 850 G5 is the largest of the three — a big screen for multi-window work, with HP Sure protections depending on configuration and an option for discrete graphics, for people whose workplace is mainly the desk.

This redesign was not just a new processor in an old shell. The HP EliteBook 850 G5's body is unibody — the top shell is milled from a single block of aluminium rather than assembled from glued panels. The difference shows up over the years: glued covers loosen and start to give slightly, while the milled body stays solid in the hand even after a third year of daily opening and closing. The battery is not glued in and the screen is matte on non-touch configurations — details that become apparent only once the machine has been someone's working tool for a long time, not while it sits new on a shelf. For a series HP positions for a long corporate life, this is engineering aimed squarely at the second and third owner.

The category this machine lives in has its own history — and one important page of it bears the Compaq logo. In October 1989 Compaq released the LTE — the first commercially successful PC-compatible laptop the size of a paper notebook. The word “notebook” was already in use for this format. Three kilograms, a built-in floppy drive, a battery lasting a few hours — by the era's measures, a miracle of miniaturization. Compaq later merged into HP, making the HP EliteBook 850 G5, by direct line of descent, the great-great-grandchild of that early machine. A pedigree few series can produce from their pocket.

Under the lid there are variants with 7th-gen Intel Core and HD Graphics 620 or 8th-gen Kaby Lake-R with UHD Graphics 620 — enough for Excel with dozens of rows, ERP and CRM systems, and video calls. The two larger models in the series could also be ordered with a discrete AMD Radeon RX540 with 2 GB — headroom for light graphics work that the 13-inch HP EliteBook 830 G5 did not have at all. The HP EliteBook 850 G5 also carries a 56 Wh battery, noticeably larger than the 50 Wh cells in the HP EliteBook 830 G5 and HP EliteBook 840 G5 from the same generation, with HP Fast Charge for quick top-ups. Memory sits on two SO-DIMM slots up to 32 GB DDR4 — a real after-purchase upgrade, not soldered chips. And the full-size RJ45 together with Thunderbolt 3 cover both the old wired office and single-cable docking.

Security is where the premium series separates from mainstream. The HP EliteBook 850 G5 relies on the hardware-enforced HP Sure technologies: Sure Start protects and recovers the BIOS after tampering, Sure Run watches critical processes, Sure Recover restores the system over the network, and Sure Click isolates the browser. This is the same foundation HP later unified under the HP Wolf Security name. Alongside it, on certain configurations, comes the integrated Sure View privacy panel at up to 650 nits in sharing mode, which blurs the screen against side viewing at the press of a button — useful for working with confidential data on a plane or in a cafe.

The honest trade-off is clear: the HP EliteBook 850 G5 is not a machine for daily carrying. Starting weight is around 1.78 kg, and with a 15.6″ chassis the model is more of a desktop replacement than a travel companion. If mobility is the priority, the smaller HP EliteBook 840 G5 offers the same platform and the same Radeon option in a 14-inch body at lower weight; and anyone who wants a large ThinkPad with hot-swap dual batteries (Power Bridge) looks toward the Lenovo ThinkPad T580. The integrated graphics, in turn, are not meant for video editing or 3D — that is what the ZBook line is for. But for a large fixed workstation and for equipping office staff with a big screen, the HP EliteBook 850 G5 remains one of the sensible refurbished business laptops: widely deployed, easy to service, and delivered with a real warranty from ITR Bulgaria as a checked used laptop.

Who it suits

Scenarios where the HP EliteBook 850 G5 makes the most sense

A fixed premium workstation

Someone who spends the day at one desk and wants a large screen instead of an external monitor. The 15.6″ format and Thunderbolt 3 docking turn the HP EliteBook 850 G5 into a comfortable desktop replacement that can still travel with you when it has to.

Multi-window work on a large screen

An accountant or analyst keeping a long spreadsheet, a report and email open at once. On 15.6″ the three fit without constant scrolling and switching — and a configuration with 32 GB of SO-DIMM memory holds up under dozens of open tabs.

Light graphics work

On configurations with the discrete AMD Radeon RX540, the model handles graphics-heavy presentations, basic image editing or a larger external display more comfortably than integrated-only variants.

Working with confidential information

A lawyer or finance specialist opening sensitive documents in open-plan offices or on the move. On configurations with Sure View (up to 650 nits in sharing mode) the screen blurs against side viewing at one button press, with no stick-on filter.

Additional information

Where the HP EliteBook 850 G5 fits in the series ▼

The HP EliteBook 850 G5 belongs to the EliteBook 800 series — HP's premium business line, which the company positions directly against the Dell Latitude 7000 and the Lenovo ThinkPad T. Below it sit the ProBook 600 (mainstream business) and ProBook 400 (entry business); above it are the flagships from the EliteBook x360 1000 line and HP Elite Dragonfly.

Within this generation the series has three size variants: the HP EliteBook 830 G5 (13.3″, the most compact, with no discrete-graphics option), the HP EliteBook 840 G5 (14″, the balanced standard) and the HP EliteBook 850 G5 (15.6″, the largest screen, with a bigger 56 Wh battery). The three share the same platform and a near-identical set of business features — the difference is mainly size and weight.

The G5 is the generation in which HP made the biggest redesign of the 800 series since its creation — a new unibody chassis, narrower bezels and the move to Thunderbolt 3. The HP EliteBook 850 G5 succeeds the HP EliteBook 850 G4 and precedes the HP EliteBook 850 G6 (an Intel 8th-gen Whiskey Lake refresh that added the AI-based Sure Sense protection). The G5 remains widely in circulation thanks to the series' long corporate life cycle.

The HP EliteBook 850 G5 is not ideal if… ▼
  • You carry the laptop every day and minimum weight is the priority — the HP EliteBook 850 G5 starts around 1.78 kg. The 14-inch HP EliteBook 840 G5 (same platform, lighter) or the 13.3-inch HP EliteBook 830 G5 make more sense.
  • You need discrete graphics for heavy tasks — video editing, 3D, CAD. The optional Radeon RX540 is for light graphics work; for a serious GPU, look at the HP ZBook line.
  • You want a 2-in-1 format or tablet mode — the HP EliteBook 850 G5 is a standard clamshell with no 360-degree hinges, although touchscreen variants exist. For a convertible from HP, look at the HP EliteBook x360 1040 G5.
  • You want the newest platform — the HP EliteBook 850 G5 comes in variants with 7th- and 8th-gen Intel Core. Newer options are the HP EliteBook 850 G6 and G7 or the 15-inch HP EliteBook 850 G8 (Intel 11th generation).
  • You expect a guaranteed privacy panel (Sure View) or discrete graphics on every unit — these are factory-order options and are not present everywhere. Check the specific configuration.
  • You need a specific guaranteed configuration (a particular CPU, RAM, SSD, a display of a given brightness, a 4G LTE module) — configurations vary significantly between units.
Choosing the right size and construction ▼

13.3-inch class (HP EliteBook 830 G5): the most compact and lightest of the trio. For people who carry the machine constantly. Trade-off: less screen area and no discrete-graphics option.

14-inch class (HP EliteBook 840 G5): the balanced standard. Enough screen for documents and spreadsheets at a weight comfortable for daily carrying; also offered with the Radeon RX540 option.

15.6-inch class (HP EliteBook 850 G5): the largest work area for multi-window work, spreadsheets and light graphics tasks, plus the bigger 56 Wh battery. Heavier — for work mainly at the desk or infrequent carrying.

Construction: the HP EliteBook 850 G5 is an aluminium unibody chassis milled from a block of aluminium — part of this generation's redesign. The series passes MIL-STD-810G testing for durability under daily corporate use.

Alternative models ▼

Within HP:

HP EliteBook 840 G5 — the 14-inch variant from the same generation. Same platform and the same Radeon RX540 option, but in a lighter body (starting around 1.48 kg). The better pick if you value mobility over screen area. Trade-off: a smaller screen and a 50 Wh battery instead of 56 Wh.

HP EliteBook 830 G5 — the 13.3-inch, the most compact in the series. For people who carry the machine constantly. Trade-off: no discrete-graphics option and a smaller work area.

HP EliteBook 850 G6 — the next generation in the 15.6″ format. A more current platform (Intel 8th-gen Whiskey Lake refresh) with the added AI-based Sure Sense protection, usually at a higher refurbished price.

HP EliteBook 850 G4 — the previous generation, before the redesign. A more affordable refurbished option, but without the G5's unibody chassis and narrower bezels.

HP ProBook 650 G5 — a 15.6″ from the mainstream business class, not premium. More affordable, but without the full set of HP Sure hardware security and with a plainer build.

Cross-brand alternatives (15.6″ / 14″ premium business class, same generation):

Lenovo ThinkPad T580 — the 15.6-inch premium Lenovo ThinkPad from the T line. The classic Lenovo ThinkPad keyboard and TrackPoint, plus Power Bridge — hot-swap dual batteries you can change without shutting the machine down. A different philosophy of durability and serviceability.

Dell Latitude 7490 — the 14-inch premium flagship from the Dell Latitude 7000. Lighter and more portable, but with a smaller screen. The HP EliteBook 850 G5 is the pick if you specifically want a larger 15.6″ screen and a discrete-graphics option.

Note: don't compare the HP EliteBook 850 G5 with the HP ProBook 450 G5 or the Dell Latitude 3590 — they belong to the mainstream/entry business class with a different target group.

Refurbished by ITR Bulgaria: what value do you get? ▼

The HP EliteBook 850 G5 is a model where refurbishment by ITR Bulgaria has clear logic. The series is built for a long corporate life: the battery is not glued in, the M.2 NVMe SSD is replaceable, and the two SO-DIMM slots allow a memory upgrade. That makes the technical audit and refurbishment easier and more predictable.

On top of that comes the series' wide corporate deployment — original batteries, HP docking stations and chargers are easy to find on the market even years after the model's launch. Long BIOS and driver support from HP rounds out the picture. So the HP EliteBook 850 G5 is a practical refurbished business laptop with support for a long time, which after passing refurbishment ships with a real warranty from ITR Bulgaria.

Frequently asked questions ▼

Is the HP EliteBook 850 G5 a good choice as a used laptop?

Yes, especially for a large fixed workstation. As a widely deployed 15.6″ premium business model it has long BIOS support from HP and easy-to-find spare parts. As a refurbished laptop from the premium class, it gives access to a large premium screen and hardware security at a more sensible price than a new budget 15-inch model.

What's the difference between the HP EliteBook 850 G5 and the HP EliteBook 840 G5?

The main difference is size: the HP EliteBook 850 G5 is 15.6″, the HP EliteBook 840 G5 is 14″. The HP EliteBook 850 G5 has a larger work area and a bigger battery (56 Wh vs 50 Wh) but starts heavier (around 1.78 kg vs around 1.48 kg). Is the HP EliteBook 850 G5 suitable for equipping office staff?

Yes — the series was built for exactly that. EliteBook supports centralised IT management through the HP Manageability Integration Kit, the HP Sure technologies provide hardware security, and standardised components make bulk rollout and support easier.
